After bak kut teh and a round of cafe coffee & cakes, Jen said "let's go for durian". This durian season is coming to a close and Jen just had to have another round at his favourite Durian 36 shop at 608, Lorong 36, Geylang.
Jen is a little crazy about durians, eating durians all over Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, etc. For years, when in Singapore, Jen will go to Durian 36 for himself and to arrange durian parties. The boss Ah Yong is the gentleman on the left (with rolled up long sleeves). His family hails from Muar, Johor where they have their own durian farm and export business. Durian 36 is founded by Ah Yong's father.
Ah Yong gets his durians from farms in Johor and Pahang, and trucks them here through his family's export business. The trucks arrive daily at the Geylang Lor 36 shop in the afternoon.
After so many years with Ah Yong, Jen said that Ah Yong doesn't do cut price gimmicks but customers will always get what they pay for. No bait and switch, no mao chong wang 冒充王 (fake mao shan wang 猫山王) nonsense. Yes, in this day and age, there are still unscrupulous durian sellers who pass off fake mao shan wang and other premium durian to unsuspecting customers.... 😡😞 When tourists are targeted, it damages our country's clean reputation 😡
Your only protection against rogue sellers is to arm yourself with basic durian knowledge and go to only verified honest durian sellers. If you know any, stick with him/her - they are gold.
This current durian season is closing in about 2 weeks. Note Geylang Durian 36 for the next season or the last hurray of this season.
This was my second time at Durian 36. For this round, we had excellent Pahang mao shan wang, golden phoenix and red prawn. We spent S$150.
