We met up at Gandhi Restaurant. It is hugely popular but not much mentioned in social media. It was my first time here and is now at the top of my mind for "go eat banana leaf" places in Singapore.

By elevenish, the takeout queue already stretched to the sidewalks. It just kept getting longer while we ate our banana leaf lunch there. People were still queuing when we were done eating and left. Yeah lah.... it is not a fancy posh place but I like this kind of down-to-earth feel in eating joints.

Gandhi_Banana_Leaf_Restaurant_Singapore Oh.... how I love this thing about traditional banana leaf restaurants. The food is spread on a banana leaf - pile of fluffy soft snowy white rice, browned crisp papadum, various curry vegetable stews.

Gandhi_Banana_Leaf_Restaurant_Singapore I love it that the staff comes around with shiny pails to top up our banana leaf with heaps of rice, curry vegetables and flood our rice with curry... o la la lah 😋 lai lai lai 😋

If there's one thing that "stress" me at good banana leaf restaurants, is there is way too much of good things to eat. At the counter, there are definitely over 20 dishes with many, I don't even know the name 😂 They all look enticing and super delicious, so I am often at a loss as to what to order. Like they say in the corporate world, it's a "happy problem" but still a problem that causes "stress" lah.... .

Gandhi_Banana_Leaf_Restaurant_Singapore Gandhi Restaurant has an ingenious solution to this "problem". After our initial order at the counter, a staff goes around with trays of different dishes. We just point and shoot at what we fancy like in a dim sum restaurant.

Gandhi_Banana_Leaf_Restaurant_Singapore It's like a dim sum place. Don't know the name of the dish never mind. Looks delicious, just point!Trigger happy customers eat more, restaurant sells more. Brilliant! Win, win!

But of course, the test of the pudding must be in the eating. Eh sai boh? (Can or cannot?) Ho jiak! 😋 (Delicious!)

Gandhi Restaurant's dishes are flavourful from the blend of spices. Flavours are well balanced with nothing overwhelming the blend or the ingredients, be it lamb, chicken, fish or vegetables. The dishes are just gently spicy hot despite its fiery look.

In Indian banana leaf restaurants, I always ask for more curry vegetables. At Gandhi, they are generous with it. Heaping mounds onto our banana leaf 😄

Ah... we had a great experience at Gandhi Restaurant. Down-to-earth, wide choice of dishes, delicious, real-banana-leaf-plus experience, and reasonable prices too. Buddy Brent went back the very next day. I will surely be back with more makan kakis.

Pro-tip: Go for the set meal. You will be served rice, papadum, curry vegetables (like above) and a choice of 1 meat dish. Then, help yourself to whatever you fancy when the "dim sum" tray comes around (at additional cost).
